What the room was

Chat-8B was a single public chat room, open to anyone, with no account and no invite. You opened the page, the site handed you a random first name, and you were in. ChatGPT was in the same room and answered when it was asked something directly. The tagline the site used for itself was "A single chat room for all 8 billion humans."

When it ran

• 6 June 2023 - first capture in the Internet Archive. The room is working, the header counts 1,500 people and 2,440 messages.
• 24 July 2023 - still working, 16,242 people. The site has switched to a dark theme and changed its tagline.
• 25 September 2023 - the page still loads but renders nothing. The data the room needed no longer comes back from the server.
• 16 June 2024 - the domain is on a parking page. It stays parked for two years.
• August 2026 - the registration lapsed, the domain became available, and it was registered again from scratch.

Why the old messages are not here

The archive kept the room's conversations, including the display names of about fifteen hundred people. We do not republish them. They were written by people who were talking to each other, not publishing an article, and none of them agreed to have their words put back online by a stranger two years later. The archived pages are kept as source material with those names and messages stripped out.

Not affiliated with the original project

The original Chat-8B was an open-source side project by an independent developer, and its source code is still public. This site is not that project, is not run by its author, and is not endorsed by them. It uses none of that code, none of its images, and none of its accounts. The only things carried over are the page title, the description and the layout as the Internet Archive recorded them, which is what restoring a domain from the archive means.

If you are the original author and you want anything on this page changed or removed, that is a reasonable ask and it will be honoured.

The room is open again

Restoring a site from the archive means restoring what people came to it to do, not painting a picture of it. The point of this one was a room, so there is a room: the front page takes messages, hands you a random name on arrival, and shows what everybody else has written. The counters in the header are the real ones.

Three rules keep it usable rather than a spam board: no links in messages, 500 characters per message, and a few seconds between them. There is no account to make and nothing to install.

The original also had ChatGPT sitting in the room and answering when asked, so that part is running again. A model answers when a message is a question, is addressed to Room by name, or clearly asks for advice. It stays quiet the rest of the time, because a room where a bot replies to every line stops being a room.

Two things worth knowing before you type. Messages sent while the assistant is answering are passed to OpenAI to produce that answer - this page is public and so is the room, so do not put anything private in it. And the assistant runs on a fixed daily budget: once that is spent it simply stops replying until the next day, while the room itself keeps working between people.
